Iyer Sets the Mark for CCS, Golf Continues to Roll and Volleyball Picks Up Big League Wins

Softball

Last week, the softball team defeated Notre Dame San Jose 15-2 behind four hits, three runs and two RBIs from Kristin LeBlanc, grade 10. Marita Del Alto, grade 12, picked up the win, allowing just one earned run and four hits, while striking out four. However, later in the week the Eagles ran into an undefeated Lincoln team and fell 6-0. The softball team hosts Mercy Burlingame today at 4 p.m. at Blackford.

Swimming

Last week the Harker swim team traveled to Menlo High for its first WBAL meet, which also featured Mercy Burlingame and Pinewood. Vivian Wang, grade 10, won both the 200 free and 100 back; Michael Auld, grade 11, won the 200 free; Grace Guan, grade 12, finished first in the 200 IM; Alex Yu, grade 9, topped the 200 IM and 400 free; and Angela Huang, grade 12, was best in both the 50 and 100 free. Come support your Harker swimmers this Friday at 4 p.m. at the Singh Aquatic Center as they host another WBAL meet.

Track and Field

Over the weekend, Niki Iyer, grade 11, competed at the Arcadia Invitational in Southern California, which featured some of the best runners from California and eight other states. Iyer continued her stellar season as she ran a personal best and the top CCS time of this season! The entire track and field team competes this Wednesday against their WBAL rivals at Bellarmine, and this Saturday at the Bearcat Invitational at San Mateo High.

Boys Volleyball

The boys volleyball team picked up two wins last week to improve to 5-8 on the season, and 3-0 in league. First, it defeated Wilcox in three games with Andrew Gu, grade 11, leading the way with 16 kills. Later in the week, the Eagles defeated Santa Clara in four games. The boys volleyball team will host Pacific Collegiate School on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Blackford and travel to King’s Academy on Friday.

Baseball

The baseball team dropped its non-league matchup with Del Mar last week 9-2. Nate Kelly, grade 10, had two hits and an RBI in the loss. The Eagles travel to San Mateo High today and host San Mateo on Thursday.

Girls Lacrosse

The girls lacrosse team lost a close match to Notre Dame San Jose 11-10 last week, but rebounded with a win over Newark 9-4. The Eagles host Carlmont today on Davis Field.

Boys Tennis

Last week, the boys tennis team picked up victories over King’s Academy and Aptos. The Eagles have a busy week as they face off with Pinewood today, Priory on Thursday and Evergreen Valley on Friday.

Boys Golf

The boys golf team continues to play well as it notched three wins last week. In a 209-250 win over King’s Academy, Ryan Vaughan, grade 11, led the way shooting a 38; Scout McNealy, grade 9, shot a team-best 34 in the team’s 185-193 win over Menlo; and in the 186-214 victory over Pinewood, Victor Shin, grade 10, and Dakota McNealy, grade 12, each shot a team-best 35. The Eagles meet up with Palo Alto today.

MS Wrestling

Dezi Johnsen, grade 6, competed at the NUWAY Nationals in Battle Creek, Mich., this past weekend. Facing some of the best wrestlers in the country, Johnsen placed seventh in the 126-pound weight class. Congrats, Dezi!

Boys Golf and Baseball Compete During Spring Break; MS Swimmer Excels–Multiple Medals over Two Events

Only boys golf and baseball were in action during the break. The rest of Harker’s spring athletes are rested and ready to continue their seasons with a full slate of games this week.

Boys Golf

Boys golf placed sixth out of 45 teams at the Champions Invitational in Indio over the break. This is considered to be perhaps the strongest high school tournament in the state. Avi Khemani, grade 11, was the highest Harker finisher. The boys have a busy week ahead, with matches Monday versus King’s Academy, Wednesday against rival Menlo and Thursday against Pinewood.

Baseball

The Eagles baseball team traveled to CSU Monterey Bay over the break, but lost 9-2 to Trinity Christian. This week, the team hosts Del Mar on Thursday at 4 p.m. and Lincoln of San Francisco on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Boys Volleyball

This Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. at Blackford, the boys volleyball team takes on Wilcox in an important league match. The team follows that up with another league match on Thursday at Santa Clara High.

Swim

Harker’s swimmers travel to Menlo on Thursday for a WBAL meet.

Softball

Harker’s softball team hosts Notre Dame San Jose today at 4 p.m. and then travels to Lincoln of San Jose on Thursday.

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team travels to King’s Academy today.

Girls lacrosse takes on Notre Dame San Jose today and Newark on Thursday.

Track and field will compete next on April 13 in a WBAL meet at Bellarmine High.

MS Swim

Over the past few weeks, Rhys Edwards, grade 7, has joined the ranks of top young swimmers on the West Coast. A few weeks ago, Edwards competed in a Junior Olympics meet in San Ramon, swimming for his club, Santa Clara Swim Club, where he made the finals in all six of his races, finishing with a silver and bronze in two of the events.

Edwards then spent most of his spring break at the Far Western Championships in Pleasanton, where the best swimmers from California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Oregon, among others, competed. Out of seven events, Edwards made the finals in four! His 11-12 boys relay team also won two golds and two silvers, even breaking a Santa Clara Swim Club team record in the process. Great job Rhys!

Alumnae Del Alto and Connell Excelling in Collegiate Athletics

March has been very good for a pair of athletic Harker alumnae! Ashley Del Alto ’13 is currently the starting left fielder for the Briar Cliff University Chargers and last week was named the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports softball player-of-the-week. The Chargers went 4-0 on the week, thanks in large part to Del Alto, who went 8-15 with seven RBIs in the four victories. Del Alto is currently leading Briar Cliff with a .338 batting average.

A little closer to home, Izzy Connell ’13 has been tearing up the track and the record books at Pepperdine University. This past weekend, Connell broke her own school records in the women’s 100m (12.13 seconds) and 200m (24.96 seconds), placing fifth and sixth, respectively, at the Bruins Legends Invitational held at UCLA. She also holds the school record in the 400m. Go, Harker alumni!

Late Winter Sports Awards Announced for Middle and Lower School

MS Wrestling – The wrestling team, coached by Karriem Stinson, Charlie Ward and Jeff Paull, participated in the Maverick’s Invitational in Santa Cruz. The following team members placed: Eric Bollar, grade 6, first place; Dezi Johnsen, grade 6, second place; Rohan Arora, grade 8, second place; Max MacKinnon, grade 8, fourth place; and Eric Fang, grade 8, fourth place.

Team awards went to Eric Fang, grade 8, (Eagle), and Henry Cunningham, grade 8, and Ava Lett, grade 6 (Coaches).

VA (Grades 7/8) Girls Basketball – The Varsity A team, coached by Josh Miller and Dan Pringle, finished in second place in the WBAL with a 6-1 record and went 8-2 overall. Team awards went to Courtni Thompson, grade 7 (MVP), Hunter Hernandez, grade 7 (Eagle) and Haley Arena, grade 8 (Coaches).

VB (Grades 7/8) Girls Basketball – The Varsity B team, coached by Jon Cvitanich, finished in a three-way tie for second place in the WBAL with a 5-2 record. Team awards went to Mariamma Vazhaeparambil, grade 7 (MVP), Renee Page, grade 7 (Eagle) and Reina Joseph, grade 7 (Coaches).

VB2 (Grade 7) Girls Basketball – The Varsity B2 team, coached by Richard Amarillas and Raul Rios, finished in seventh place in the WBAL with a 1-6 record. Team awards went to Shalini Rohra (MVP), Aditi Vinod (Eagle) and Anna Weirich (Coaches).

JVA (Grade 6) Girls Basketball – The Junior Varsity A team, coached by Brittney Moseley, finished in third place in the WBAL with a 5-2 record. Team awards went to Jacqueline Hu (MVP), Ashley Barth (Eagle), and Priya Rohra and Anya Warrier (Coaches).

JVB (Grade 5) Girls Basketball – The Junior Varsity B1 team, coached by Lisa Lubke, finished in fourth place in the WBAL with a 3-4 record. Team awards went to Amrita Pasupathy (MVP), Avery Olson (Eagle) and Alexis Nishimura (Coaches).

JVC (Grade 4) Girls Basketball – The Junior Varsity C team, coached by Maria Maldonado, finished in fourth place in the WBAL with a 2-4 record. Team awards went to Kate Grannis (MVP), Maya Kelly (Eagle) and Harshini Chaturvedula (Coaches).

LS Intramural Girls Basketball – Team awards went to Jasleen Hansra, grade 5 (MVP), Alena Su, grade 4 (Eagle) and Emily McCartney, grade 4 (Coaches). The team was coached by Ken Allen and Kristian Tiopo.

VA (Grades 7/8) Boys Soccer – The Varsity A team, coached by Chris Salcido and Matt Arensberg, finished in third place in the WBAL with a record of 3-5. Team awards went to Andrew Cheplyansky, grade 8 (MVP), Ryan Tobin, grade 7 (Eagle) and Arya Maheshwari, grade 7 (Coaches).

VB (Grade 7) Boys Soccer – The Varsity B team, coached by Brighid Wood, finished in fourth place in the WBAL with a 4-3 record. Team awards went to Anton Novikov (MVP), Rosh Roy (Eagle) and James Pflaging and Marcos Acero (Coaches).

JVA (Grade 6) Boys Soccer – The Junior Varsity A team, coached by Cyrus Merrill and Dan Williams, finished in third place in the WBAL with a record of 3-2-3. Team awards went to Ishaan Mantripragada (MVP), Sasvath Ramachandran (Eagle) and Dhruv Saoji (Coaches).

JVB (Grade 5) Boys Soccer – The Junior Varsity B team, coached by Jared Ramsey and Tobias Wade, finished in second place in the WBAL with a record of 2-1-1 and went 3-1-2 overall. Team awards went to Rodrigo Gonzales (MVP), Pranav Mullappalli (Eagle) and Michael Pflaging (Coaches).

LS Intramural Boys Soccer – Team awards went to Neel Handa, grade 4 (Eagle), and Andrew Au and Matthew Goetting, both grade 4 (Coaches). The team was coached by Randy Le Gris and Jim McGovern.

Boys Golf Leads the Way as Spring Sports Head into the Break

Boys Golf

The boys golf team defeated Crystal Springs Uplands 175-216 last week. Ryan Vaughan, grade 11, shot a team-best 32. The Eagles face The King’s Academy Monday.

Girls Lacrosse

The girls lacrosse team came up short 12-10 against Mercy Burlingame and 9-3 against Sacred Heart Cathedral last week. On Tuesday, the Eagles face off with Notre Dame San Jose at PAL Stadium.

Baseball

The baseball team dropped two games to Crystal Springs Uplands last week, 11-0 and 10-3. It faces off with Trinity Christian this Thursday at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Softball

The softball team lost to the Fremont High 11-0 last week. Cameron Zell, grade 9, had two hits in the loss. The Eagles meet up with Notre Dame San Jose on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Blackford.

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team lost to a tough Menlo team 7-0 last week, but rebounded with a 5-2 win over Crystal Springs Uplands. The Eagles are back at it Tuesday as they face The King’s Academy.

Boys Volleyball

The boys volleyball team dropped a four-game match to Fremont last week, with Chris Gong, grade 9, leading the way with 10 kills. Next Wednesday at 5:45 p.m., the Eagles host Wilcox High at Blackford.

Track and Field

The track and field team competed at the Firebird Relays at Fremont High last weekend. Highlights included Demonte Aleem, grade 9, placing first in the frosh/soph 100m and shotput; Anthony Contreras, grade 10, placing third in the frosh/soph 100m; and Lilian Gonzales, grade 9, placing fifth in the frosh/soph 3200m. The Eagles take on their WBAL rivals at their next meet held at Bellarmine High on April 13.

 

Swim

The Eagle swim team traveled to Sacred Heart Prep last week for the SHP Invitational. Highlights included a win in the girl’s 200 Medley Relay consisting of Taylor Kohlmann, grade 10, Grace Guan, grade 12, Vivian Wang, grade 10, and Angela Li, grade 9, who improved the CCS qualifying time; Vivian and Grace also went first and third respectively in the 100 Backstroke, both swimming CCS qualifying times; Michael Auld, grade 11, won the 500 Freestyle with a commanding eighteen second lead over his closest opponent; and Li, Guan, Wang and Ihita Mandal, grade 9,  qualified for CCS in the 400 Free Relay. The Swim team has a WBAL meet on April 7 at Menlo High.

Boys Golf Takes Third at Marin Catholic Wildcat Invitational

On Monday, the boys golf team competed in the Marin Catholic Wildcat Invitational, which featured 23 of the Bay Area’s best high school golf teams.

Harker proved it had become one of the elite teams in Northern California by finishing third, trailing only powerhouses De La Salle and Campolindo. Dakota McNealy, grade 12, and brother Colt, grade 11, led the way for the Eagles, shooting a team-best 74 and 75, respectively, on the par 71 course.

“We fought through a very cold, rainy and windy day. We were all exhausted by end of a 12-hour plus day,” said coach Ie-Chen Cheng. “We’re trying to put them through every test possible to get them ready for the postseason. I’m proud of these kids.” No rest for the team though, as it travels to Poplar Creek Golf Course in San Mateo to take on Crystal Springs Uplands today.

Boys Golf Stays Undefeated, Track Sets New Records and Baseball Tosses a No-Hitter

Boys Golf

Staying undefeated, the boys golf team picked up victories over Menlo and Sacred Heart Prep last week. Avi Khemani, grade 11, led the way for the Eagles, shooting a 36 in the Eagles two stroke win over Menlo. Sandip Nirmel, grade 11, shot a 35 in the 188-212 win over SHP. The Eagles travel north to compete in the Marin Catholic Wildcat Invitational today.

Track and Field

The track and field team traveled to Sacred Heart Prep last week and did very well as it competed in its first WBAL meet of the year. The team of Aria Coalson, Gloria Guo and Grace Koonmen, all grade 10, and Sara Min, grade 9, set a new school record in the girls 400m relay. Niki Iyer, grade 11, continued her amazing year as she won the 1600m. Winnie Li, grade 11, took first in the high jump, as well as second in the 100m hurdles and third in the 300m hurdles. Anthony Contreras, grade 10, took second in the 200m, and tied with Lucas Wang, grade 11, for third in the long jump. Bill Liang, grade 11, won the 300m hurdles, his first ever first place finish. The Eagles will compete at the Firebird Invitational this weekend at Fremont High.

Girls Lacrosse

The girls lacrosse team fell to Saratoga 11-2 last week. This week, the team hosts Mercy Burlingame at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and travels to Sacred Heart Prep on Thursday.

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team defeated Priory 7-0 last week, before losing a tough match to Sacred Heart Prep 4-3 later in the week. This week, the Eagles face off with Menlo on Tuesday and Crystal Springs Uplands on Thursday, both at 4 p.m. at the Santa Clara Tennis Center.

Baseball

The boys varsity baseball team started last week with a tough 4-3 loss to Westmoor High, but finished the week with two big wins over Pinewood and O’Connell of San Francisco. In the 12-2 win over Pinewood, Dominic Cea, grade 10, led the way offensively as he drove in three runs. Cea was back at it again over the weekend against O’Connell, but this time on the mound, as he tossed a no-hitter, striking out 12 and walking two as Harker picked up the 3-0 victory. Trenton Thomas, grade 12, had the big hit for the Eagles, as he drove in two runs on a first-inning single. The Eagles will face Crystal Springs Uplands twice this week.

JV Baseball

Last week, the JV baseball team defeated James Lick 9-2 behind a strong 4 inning performance from Akhil Arun, grade 10, who earned the win. Tanay Kamat, grade 10, had two hits, scored two runs and pitched two shutout innings to close out the victory. The JV squad takes on Hillsdale today at 4pm at Blackford.

Swim

The swim team traveled to Sacred Heart Prep over the weekend to race in the Small School Invitational. Highlights included Alex Yu, grade 9, placing first in the 500 freestyle and Vivian Wang, grade 10, winning the 100 butterfly and taking second in the 100 breaststroke, qualifying for CCS with both times. In addition, the 200 medley relay team of Taylor Kohlmann, grade 10, Vivian Wang, grade 10, Grace Guan, grade 12, and Karen Tu, grade 12, finishing second with a CCS qualifying time. The next swim meet is April 7 at Menlo.

Softball

The varsity softball team suffered its first loss of the season last week as it fell to The King’s Academy 13-3. Alisa Wakita, grade 12, had two hits and an RBI in the loss. The Eagles travel to Gunderson High today and Fremont on Wednesday.

Boys Volleyball

The boys volleyball team fell to Mountain View High in three games last week before going 1-3 at the Campbell Classic hosted by Leigh High over the weekend, picking up a win over Seaside. The Eagles host Harbor High on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m., then are at Fremont on Wednesday, before coming back home on Friday to face off with Eastside College Prep.

MS Wrestling

Last week the middle school wrestling team competed in the Mission Hills Classic held at Santa Cruz High. Eric Bollar, grade 6, took first place in his weight class, with Dezi Johnson, grade 6, and Rohan Arora, grade 8, placing second in their weight classes.

Track, Softball and Boys Golf Lead the Way for a Strong Spring Season

Softball

The girls varsity softball team picked up a 12-2 win over visiting St. Francis of Watsonville last week. Grace Park, grade 11, had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Eagles. Harker travels to The King’s Academy on Tuesday.

Baseball

The boys varsity baseball team fell 12-3 to visiting San Mateo High last week. Dominic Cea, grade 10, had two hits and two RBIs in the loss. The Eagles were rained out in their other two contests of the week. This week, the team hosts Westmoor on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Blackford; it travels to Pinewood on Thursday; and on Saturday, it hosts O’Connell High of San Francisco at Blackford at 11 a.m..

Track and Field

The Harker track team competed in the King’s Track Classic over the weekend, and Coach Scott Chisam said it was “probably our best team meet in many years.” Elijah Edgehill, grade 12, ran the fourth fastest time in the 100m and 200m. Anthony Contreras, grade 10, finished first in the 100m and 200m frosh/soph finals. Gloria Guo, grade 10, placed first in the frosh/soph 100m finals. Also this weekend, Niki Iyer, grade 11, competed at the K-Bell Classic and finished first in the 3200m with a time of 10:40.23. The Eagles will face the rest of the WBAL on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Prep.

Swim

The Harker swim team will compete at the Small School Invitational this Saturday at Sacred Heart Prep.

Boys Golf

The boys golf team had a very impressive showing over the past week. First, it placed second at Corral de Tierra Country Club as it matched up with Palma, Salinas and Carmel. Jin Kim, grade 10, led the Eagles with a one-over-par 37. Later in the week, Ryan Vaughan, grade 11, shot the low score of 33 as the Eagles defeated The King’s Academy 176-216. Harker ended the week with a 169-185 win over Evergreen Valley High. Next for the Eagles is a Monday afternoon showdown with Menlo at Cinnabar.

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team picked up two more wins last week as it defeated Pinewood 7-0 and Aragon 5-2. David Wen, grade 10, the team of Anjay Saklecha, grade 9, and Randy Zhao, grade 10, and the team of Swapnil Garg, grade 10, and Kai Franz, grade 9, all had come-from-behind victories. The Eagles face off with Sacred Heart Prep this Thursday at the Santa Clara Tennis Center.

Girls Lacrosse

Last week, the girls varsity lacrosse team fell to Castilleja 13-1, but later in the week picked up its first win of the year with a 13-4 victory over Newark. The Eagles will host Saratoga this Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. on Davis Field.

Boys Volleyball

The boys volleyball team suffered two tough losses last week as it lost in five games against both Lynbrook and Amador Valley. In the loss to Lynbrook, Andrew Gu, grade 11, had 11 kills, and in the loss to Amador, Ray Song, grade 11, had 12 kills. The Eagles face off with Mountain View this Tuesday at Blackford at 6:45 p.m.

All-League teams were recently announced and, once again, Harker was well represented in the West Bay Athletic League.

Boys Golf and Tennis Teams Fight Hard at Prestigious Tournaments, Swimmers Qualify for CCS

Boys Golf

Last week, the Harker golf team traveled to Antioch to compete in the Gambetta Tournament, the longest running high school golf tournament in Northern California. The Eagles finished fourth – Harker’s best-ever finish at this tournament – behind Bay Area powerhouses Campolindo, San Ramon and De La Salle. Leading the way for the Eagles was Avi Khemani, grade 11, who finished in fourth place with a 2-under-par 70, the best-ever individual performance for a Harker golfer at this tournament. The highlight of Khemani’s day was a consecutive birdie, eagle, birdie on the back nine, to card a tournament low 31. Scout McNealy, grade 9, continuing the family linksmen tradition, shot a 1-over-par 73, finishing in a tie for ninth place. The Eagles travel to Corral de Tierra Country Club today to face Palma High School.

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team started its season with a 6-1 league win over King’s Academy last Tuesday. The Eagles then headed south over the weekend to compete in the California Tennis Classic in Fresno. After two consecutive years of strong finishes, the Eagles were selected as the only tournament team to move up two divisions, which matched them up with some of the best teams in the state. The Eagles went 1-2 on the weekend, with their sole win coming in dramatic fashion. Harker upset defending Central Coast Champion Clovis West High School in the closest tennis match in both tournament and Harker history; it required three tie-breaking criteria and, ultimately, the winner of the No. 1 singles match to decide to winner. In the clinching match, Ronak Baldua, grade 12, overcame three match points before coming from behind to win 12-10 in a third set tiebreaker. Other strong performers included David Wen, grade 10, as well as the doubles team of Randy Zhao, grade 10, and Anjay Saklecha, grade 9. The Eagles travel to Pinewood on Tuesday to continue league action.

Softball

Last week, the girls softball team traveled to Palo Alto High School and defeated the Vikings 10-5. Tong Wu, grade 12, led the Eagles with two hits and three RBIs. The Eagles will make up their contest with Menlo Atherton as their Friday match up was cancelled due to rain. Harker will host St. Francis Watsonville this Friday at Blackford.

Baseball

The boys baseball team picked up an 11-2 win over North Valley Baptist last week as Miles DeWitt, grade 12, had three hits and three RBIs to lead the way for the Eagles. However, Harker was defeated 6-2 by Crystal Springs Uplands in their league opener. Akhil Arun, grade 10, drove in two runs in the loss. The Eagles host San Mateo on Tuesday and travel to Jefferson High on Thursday.

Track and Field

The track and field team was rained out this past weekend, midway through the Willow Glen Invitational. Before the event was shut down, Alycia Cary, grade 9, ran the seventh-fastest 800m, Elijah Edgehill, grade 12, ran the seventh-fastest 100m dash of the day and Anthony Contreras, grade 10, ran the 10th-fastest time. This Saturday, the Eagles will compete at the Kings Track Classic.

Boys Volleyball

The boys varsity volleyball team went 1-1 last week, losing to Oak Grove in five games. Andrew Gu, grade 11, led the Eagles with 14 kills. Later in the week, the Eagles traveled to Monterey High and came up with a three game win. Chris Gong, grade 9, led the way with 12 kills. The Eagles host Lynbrook on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at Blackford and host Amador Valley on Friday at 6:45 p.m. at Bucknall.

The girls lacrosse team dropped three matchups last week, falling to Sacred Heart Cathedral and Gunn, before losing a tough 11-9 overtime loss to York. The Eagles will host Castilleja on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and Newark on Friday at 5 p.m.

Swim

Even the rain and wind couldn’t stop the Harker swim team from competing this past weekend at the Monta Vista High School meet. Cedric Nowatzyk, grade 9, Ihita Mandal, grade 9, Karen Tu, grade 12, Anika Jain, grade 11, Philip Krause, grade 12, Alex Yu, grade 9, and Kevin Tzeng, grade 10, all swam personal bests at the event. Congratulations to Vivian Wang, grade 10, and Michael Auld, grade 11, who each had CCS qualifying times in their events. The Eagles are back in the pool on March 19 for the Small School Invitational at Sacred heart Prep.
