Niki Iyer, grade 11, and the boys golf team finished off their impressive seasons last week by each placing at the state championships.
Iyer ran one of the top upsets at the California State Track Championships, where she placed third. Coming off of her CCS title run a week before, she was ranked 10th in the 3200-meter state meet run. Iyer placed 17th in last year’s state meet. She ran a 5:12 first mile, then a 5:12 for the second mile. The race took place in Clovis last Saturday in 93-degree weather at 10 p.m. Her third place finish was the best among all CCS runners at the competition.
The boys golf team made it to the state finals for the first time in Harker golf history and finished as the sixth best high school team in California! Please congratulate our boys golf team on a historic season. The team has every reason to be proud of its accomplishments and most team members will return next year, so we’ll look for more of the same! After an impressive athletic year, Harker has a chance to bring home two state titles this week.
The boys golf team finished third in NorCals last week, earning a spot to play for a state championship this Wednesday at the San Gabriel Country Club in Southern California. Niki Iyer, grade 11, won a CCS championship in the women’s 3200m last Friday and will race for a state title this weekend at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
The boys golf team took second place in the CCS finals last week, with Dakota McNealy, grade 12, leading the way for the Eagles as he finished tied for fifth overall. The top three CCS teams moved on to the NorCal Championships at Corral De Tierra Country Club this past Monday, where the Eagles continued their impressive run as they placed third to qualify for the state tournament to be held Wednesday at San Gabriel Country Club in Southern California. Ryan Vaughan, grade 11, led the Eagles, shooting a 1-over-par.
Girls Golf
Katherine Zhu, grade 10, played at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Tournament in Florida this past week. After two days of stroke play, Katherine and her partner shot an 8-under-par, earning the No. 3 ranking out of 64 teams from around the world. We will bring you results of her play on Monday as soon as they come in.
Track and Field
The CCS track semifinals were held this past week with four Harker athletes competing. Anthony Contreras, grade 10, finished fifth in his 200-meter heat and sixth in his 400m heat, but did not qualify for the finals. Demonte Aleem, grade 9, the only freshman competing in the semis, finished 28 out of 32 throwers, setting a school record in the process. Davis Dunaway, grade 11, finished seventh in his 300m hurdle heat. Finally, Niki Iyer, grade 11, took first in the 3200m semifinals, beating the second fastest runner by 13 seconds! She will compete in the CCS finals this Friday at Gilroy High School.
Swimming
Vivian Wang, grade 10, competed at the State Swimming & Diving Championships in Fresno over the weekend and did Harker proud! The sophomore finished fourth in the state in the 200 IM and seventh in the state in the 100 freestyle. Congratulations, Vivian!

VA (Grades 7-8) Girls Volleyball: The Varsity A team, coached by Diana Melendez and Stephanie Coleman, finished as LEAGUE CHAMPS in the WBAL with a record of 7-1. Team awards went to Emily Cheng, grade 8 (Eagle), and Julia Yusupov, grade 7, and Laruen Beede, grade 8 (Coaches).
VB (Grades 7-8) Girls Volleyball: The Varsity B team, coached by Xiaofeng Foret, finished in third place in the WBAL with a record of 5-2. Team awards went to Rachel Abellera, grade 8 (MVP), Hannah Grannis, grade 7 (Eagle) and Anvitha Tummala, grade 7 (Coaches).
VB2 (Grades 7-8) Girls Volleyball: The Varsity B2 team, coached by Josh Miller, finished in sixth place in the WBAL with a record of 3-4. Team awards went to Anu Selvaraj, grade 8 (MVP), Aria Wong, grade 7 (Eagle) and Ayla Tanurhan, grade 8 (Coaches).
JVA (Grade 6) Girls Volleyball: The Junior Varsity A team, coached by Tina Mai, finished in fifth place in the WBAL with a record of 2-4. Team awards went to Tara Ozdemir (MVP), Leyla Artun (Eagle) and Sarah Leafstrand (Coaches).
JVB6 (Grade 6) Girls Volleyball: The Junior Varsity B6 team, coached by Sarah Bell, finished as LEAGUE CHAMPS in the WBAL with an undefeated record of 6-0. Team awards went to Michelle Liu (MVP), Emily Tan (Eagle) and Elizabeth Shchegrov (Coaches).
JVB1 (Grade 5) Girls Volleyball: The Junior Varsity B1 team, coached by Ellie Pereria, finished in second place in the WBAL with a record of 5-1. Team awards went to Clarie Chen (MVP), Shea Bryden (Eagle) and Lexi Nishimura (Coaches).
JVB2 (Grade 4) Girls Volleyball: The Junior Varsity B2 team, coached by Sydney Voss, finished in ninth place in the WBAL with a record of 0-6. Team awards went to Kate Grannis (MVP), Margaret Cartee (Eagle) and Masha Velikhovskaya (Coaches).
LS Intramural Girls Volleyball: Team awards went to Emily McCartney and Maggie Yan, both grade 4 (Eagle), and Emma Cai, Ceren Erdogan and Cecilia Yang, all grade 4 (Coaches). The team was coached by Maria Maldonado.
VA (Grade 8) Boys Volleyball: The Varsity A team, coached by Pete Anderson, finished as LEAGUE CHAMPS in the ADAL with an undefeated record of 8-0 and an overall record of 9-0. Team awards went to Jeffrey Kwan (MVP), Vedanth Sundaram (Eagle) and Vance Hirota (Coaches).
JVA (Grades 6-7) Boys Volleyball: The Junior Varsity A team, coached by Pete Anderson, finished in second place in the ADAL with a record of 6-2. Team awards went to Marcus Page, grade 6 (MVP), Avery Young, grade 7 (Eagle) and Sujith Pakala, grade 6 (Coaches).
VA (Grades 7-8) Baseball: The Varsity A team, coached by Jeff Paull and Matt Arensberg, finished in fifth place in the WBAL with a record of 1-4 and an overall record of 2-4. Team awards went to Nicholas Coulter (MVP), Marcus Anderson (Eagle) and John Lynch (Coaches), all grade 7.
JVA (Grades 6-7) Baseball: The Junior Varsity A team, coached by Jon Cvitanich and Richard Amarillas, finished in fifth place in the WBAL with a record of 0-3-1 and an overall record of 0-5-1. Team awards went to Richard Amarillas, grade 6 (MVP), Chirag Kaushik, grade 6 (Eagle) and George Wehner, grade 7 (Coaches).
JVB (Grades 4-5) Baseball: The Junior Varsity B team, coached by Dan Pringle, Randy LeGris and Kristian Tiopo, finished in fourth place in the WBAL with a record of 2-4. Team awards went to Frederick Hoch, grade 5 (MVP), Tyler Beede, grade 5 (Eagle), and Wyatt Cote, grade 5, and Ashwin Kuppahally, grade 4 (Coaches).
VA (Grades 6-8) Water Polo: The Varsity A team, coached by Ted Ujifusa and Allie Lamb, finished with a WBAL record of 0-5 and an overall record of 1-6. Team awards went to Cassandra Ruedy, grade 8, and Bayden Yazalina, grade 7 (MVP), Anna Arnaudova, grade 7 (Eagle) and Chloe Affaki, grade 7 (Coaches).
VA (Grades 6-8) Tennis: The Varsity A team, coached by JP Fruttero and John Fruttero, finished as LEAGUE CHAMPS and TOURNAMENT CHAMPS of the WBAL with a record of 7-0. The team also finished as LEAGUE CHAMPS of the MTP with a record of 4-0. In the MTP playoffs, Harker lost 5-4 to Kennedy in the finals. The Eagles finished the season with an impressive 13-1 record. Team awards went to Mihir Sharma and Ramanand Vegesna (MVP), Simar Bajaj and Gina Partridge (Eagle), and Jack Hansen, Bryan Wang and Rachel Broweleit (Coaches), all grade 8.
VB (Grades 6-8) Tennis: The Varsity B team, coached by Matt McGee, JP Fruttero and John Fruttero, finished as LEAGUE CHAMPS and TOURNAMENT CHAMPS of the WBAL with an undefeated record of 6-0 and an overall record of 8-0. Team awards went to Fonda Hu, grade 7, and Shika Tseitlin, grade 6 (MVP), Dawson Chen, grade 6 (Eagle) and Alexander Liou and Dhruv Saoji, both grade 6 (Coaches).
A handful of Harker swimmers competed at the CCS finals over the weekend. Vivian Wang, grade 10, took second place in both the women’s 200 IM and the women’s 100 free and will compete this weekend at the CIF state championships in Fresno. Wang’s CCS success helped lead the Harker women’s team to a 21st place CCS finish. The top men’s swimmer was Michael Auld, grade 11, who finished 18th in the men’s 500 free.
Track and Field
Five track and field athletes will be competing at the CCS championships next Saturday. Harker competed at the WBAL finals last week and the top two finishers in each event stamped their ticket to CCS. Davis Dunaway, grade 11, took first in the pole vault and second in the 300m hurdles; Demonte Aleem, grade 9, won the shot put; Kevin Wang, grade 12, took second in the discus; Anthony Contreras, grade 10, finished second in the 400m and 200m; and Niki Iyer, grade 11, won both the 1600m and 3200m races, setting a new meet record in the latter. Boys Golf
The boys golf team kicked off its CCS journey last week as six golfers represented Harker in the regional tournament. The Eagles placed second in the regional tournament and tied for third overall, sending them to the CCS finals to be played on Tuesday. Avi Khemani, grade 11, and Scout McNealy, grade 9, were the top Harker golfers, each shooting a 73 and tying for ninth. If the Eagles place in the top three of the final eight teams, they will play in the state tournament.
Boys Tennis
The season came to an end for the boys tennis team last week. After a first round CCS victory over Santa Cruz, the Eagles lost 5-2 to No. 8 seeded Gunn High School. Congrats on a great season!
Girls Lacrosse
The girls lacrosse team’s season came to end last week as the Eagles lost to Notre Dame San Jose on Senior Day 19-9. The team went 2-18 on the year.
Boys Volleyball
The boys volleyball team rode an undefeated league record into CCS, where they were given home court in their first-round match against Westmont. The Eagles fought hard and took the Warriors to the limit, but eventually lost in five games. Congrats on a great season!
Baseball
The varsity baseball team finished off its season last week with a win over San Jose and a loss to Jefferson in the season finale. Taking on San Jose High in their final home game of the season, the Eagles came away with the 9-2 win. Jefferson defeated the Eagles 10-2 to close out the season for the Eagles, who finished 9-13 on the year.
Softball
The softball team played its last two games of the season last week. In a 12-11 loss to Notre Dame San Jose, Taylor Lam, grade 9, had a huge game with two hits, including a grand slam, and seven RBIs. On Senior Day, the Eagles dropped another close game, this time to The King’s Academy, 9-8. The Eagles were 6-10 on the year.
Harker’s baseball and girls lacrosse teams took top honors, with GPAs of 3.7519 and 3.9098, respectively, in the spring 2016 CCS Scholastic Team Awards. Five more Harker teams were in the top five in their sport: boys golf (3.7100 GPA), boys swimming (3.5441), girls swimming (3.8451), boys track and field (3.4807) and boys volleyball (3.6760). Each team had a collective GPA that was among the top five in their sport for the season.
Five fall teams and three winter teams also received Scholastic Team Awards, making for an impressive 2015-16 season. Congratulations to all the hard-working Harker student athletes!
The boys tennis team won its CCS opening round match against Santa Cruz 5-2 last week. They travel to Gunn High School today at 3 p.m. for their second round match. Good luck, Eagles!
Boys Volleyball
The boys volleyball team defeated The King’s Academy in four games last week to win its fourth league championship in school history and its first since 2008, going 10-0 in league play this season. The Eagles earned an 11th seed and host Westmont on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the opening round of CCS. Good luck!

The track and field team will be well represented in the league finals next Friday at Palo Alto, as the Eagles had 29 season bests at the league trials last week. Qualifying for the league finals are: Sara Min, grade 9, in the JV 100m; Alycia Cary, grade 9, in the JV 200m and JV 800m; Gloria Guo, grade 10, and Niki Iyer, grade 11, in the varsity 800m; Demonte Aleem, grade 9, in the varsity 100m and shot put; Anthony Contreras, grade 10, in the 200m and 400m; Aashish Jain, grade 11, in the JV long jump; Jain, Mitch Granados, grade 9, and Jonathan Yiu, grade 12, in the JV 100m; Arthur Ye, grade 12, in the JV shot put; Davis Dunaway, grade 11, and Kevin Kim, grade 12, in the varsity 300m hurdles; and Dunaway in the varsity pole vault, where he also qualified for the CCS championships. The varsity softball team dropped an 8-4 game to Mercy Burlingame last week, but Tong Wu, grade 12, had two hits and three RBIs. The 6-8 Eagles finish their regular season this week as they travel to Notre Dame San Jose on Tuesday, and host The King’s Academy on Wednesday.
Boys Golf
The boys golf team was upset in the league championship tournament as it took home a second place finish last week. This Wednesday the Eagles will begin their CCS journey at Rancho Cañada Golf Club in Carmel. Good luck, Eagles!
Girls Lacrosse
The girls lacrosse team dropped two games last week – a 13-3 loss to Aragon and a 15-5 loss to Woodside. The Eagles finish off their season on Tuesday as they travel to Notre Dame San Jose.
Baseball
The boys baseball team swept a two game-series with Pinewood last week. In a 16-9 victory over the Panthers early in the week, Miles DeWitt, grade 12, had two hits and six RBIs, including a grand slam, to make it a very memorable Senior Day. In the 6-2 win over Pinewood later in the week, Matthew Kennedy, grade 10, had two hits and two RBIs to lead the way for the Eagles. Harker traveled to Menlo to end the week, but lost 11-3. Trenton Thomas and Arthur Wolff Goldstein, both grade 12, each drove in a run in the defeat. The 8-12 Eagles finish off the regular season this week with a game today at Blackford versus San Jose High and then travel to Jefferson on Tuesday.
Swim
Last week, the Harker swim team competed in the league championships. Highlights included a second place finish for the girls 200 medley relay team of Vivian Wang, grade 10, Taylor Kohlmann, grade 10, Grace Guan, grade 12, and Angela Huang, grade 12; Guan placing third in the girls 100 fly; Wang taking first and Guan taking third in the girls 100 back; Jack Farnham, grade 11, winning the boys 100 back; the girls 400 free relay team of Wang, Kohlmann, Guan and Huang placing second; the boys 400 free relay team of Farnham, Michael Auld, grade 11, Justin Culpepper, grade 11, and Alex Yu, grade 9, placing third; and Wang winning the girls 200 free, while breaking the Harker and league record!
Swimmers competing in CCS events starting this Friday are Wang, Kohlmann, Guan, Huang, Yu, Culpepper, Farnham, Auld, Angela Li, grade 9, Justan Su, grade 10, Karen Tu, grade 12, Ihita Mandal, grade 9, Kevin Tzeng, grade 10, and Clarissa Wang, grade 9.
The boys volleyball hot streak continued last week as the Eagles defeated Eastside College Prep and Santa Clara, each in three games. Over the weekend, the Eagles went 4-2 in the Harbor High Tournament, taking the silver division championship. They are now 15-11 on the season and still undefeated in league. This Wednesday is Senior Night as the Eagles face King’s Academy at Blackford at 5:45 p.m. to determine the league champion!
Swimming
Seniors Karen Tu, Grace Guan, Angela Huang, Justan Su and Philip Krause were honored at their final home meet last week as the swim team took on King’s Academy. Alex Yu, grade 9, took first in the 500 free and qualified for CCS. The 200m relay team of Guan, Huang, Taylor Kohlmann, grade 10, and Vivian Wang, grade 10, also qualified for CCS with their first place time. Other event winners included Guan in the 100 fly, 100 back and 400 free relay, Huang in the 100 free and 400 free relay, Ihita Mandal, grade 9, in the 500 free, and 400 free relay, Kohlmann in the 400 free relay, and Angela Li, grade 9, in the 400 free relay. The Eagles travel to Sacred heart Prep for the WBAL trials this Friday and Saturday.
Boys Tennis
After a 7-0 loss to undefeated Menlo early last week, the boys tennis team headed into the WBAL tournament looking to regain some momentum heading into CCS. The Eagles did just that, as six of the seven Harker participants advanced to the round of 16. Also showing well at the tournament was the doubles team of Randy Zhao, grade 10, and Anjay Saklecha, grade 9, who eventually ended with a third place finish. The Eagles now await their seeding fate as CCS begins later this week.
Softball
Tong Wu, grade 12, had two hits and two RBIs as the softball team dropped a 15-5 game to Castilleja early last week. However, later in the week the Eagles defeated Pinewood 7-6 in dramatic fashion as Anika Rajamani, grade 9, came through in the clutch with a two out, two run, bases loaded, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. On Tuesday the Eagles travel to Mercy Burlingame and are home on Friday versus King’s Academy for Senior Day.
Baseball
The baseball team picked up two wins against Westmoor last week. In a 10-4 victory early in the week, Dominic Cea, grade 10, had three hits and two RBIs. Later in the week, the Eagles defeated the Rams 12-6. Tanay Kamat, grade 10, and Miles DeWitt, grade 12, each drove in two runs, and Nate Kelly, grade 10, added three hits. The Eagles host Pinewood on Tuesday a 4 p.m., and then travel to Pinewood on Thursday and Menlo on Friday.
Track and Field
It was another big day for the Harker track and field team last week, as 25 season bests were produced at the meet at King’s Academy. Anthony Contreras, grade 10, continued his impressive season as he won the 200m and 400m and anchored the winning 1600m relay. Demonte Aleem, grade 9, took first in the shot put with a throw of 41’0”. Kevin Wang and Jason Lee, both grade 12, took second and fourth, respectively, in the shot put. Wang also placed second in the discus, with Jonathan Hochberg, grade 12, placing third. Finishing fourth in their respective races were Gloria Guo, grade 10, in the 800m, Sara Min, grade 9, in the girls 200m, and Bill Liang, grade 11, in the boys 200m. Jonathan Dai, grade 12 , sprinted to a third place finish in the 100. Finally, Arthur Ye, grade 12, and Davis Howard, grade 11, took first and second in the JV shot put. This weekend, the Eagles travel to Palo Alto high school for the WBAL League Championships.
Boys Golf
Last week the boys golf team picked up a win by forefeit, but still enjoyed Senior Day as Dakota McNealy and Zarek Drozda, both grade 12, were honored. The Eagles travel to Half Moon Bay today to defend their league title, followed by the start of CCS next week.
Girls Lacrosse
The girls lacrosse team dropped a 12-9 matchup with Mercy Burlingame and an 11-10 game against Carlmont last week. In the tight matchup with Carlmont, the Eagles fell in the final minute, but Elise Mayer, grade 9, scored 5 goals in the loss. This week, the Eagles host Aragon on Wednesday and travel to Woodside on Friday.
The middle school golf team took first place this week at the WBAL Spring Golf Tournament, beating out six other teams. With a top four average of 37.25, the Harker golfers edged out second place Nueva by a 4-stroke margin. Marcus Page, grade 6, placed first among all golfers shooting a 2-under-par 32, winning by 2 strokes. Katelyn Vo, grade 8, Natalie Vo, grade 7, and Bowen Yin, grade 7, each shot 39 to tie for sixth place.
Harker had five of the top 13 golfers in the field of 48 middle schoolers. In addition, for the first time in Harker history, three girls made the team of eight. “I am extremely proud of this group,” said coach Ie-Chen Cheng. “You can see it in their eyes, they wanted to bring the trophy back to Harker. After close losses at the past couple tournaments, their hard work really has paid off.”
Varsity Takes League Title
The boys varsity golf team also had a good week as it clinched its third consecutive league title. It was also the team’s second straight undefeated season, stretching its league winning streak to 22 matches! It is an extremely deep team with different golfers often leading the way during match play. Harker’s quest for a CCS title starts on May 10.
It was a busy week for the Harker track team as it competed in two meets. Early in the week, the Eagles faced off with their WBAL rivals and had one of their best-ever meets, achieving 38 personal bests. Kevin Wang, grade 12, won both the shot put and discus; Demonte Aleem, grade 9, set two freshman school records on his way to two second place finishes in the 100m and shot put; Anthony Contreras, grade 10, took first in the 400m, and is now the sophomore school record holder in the 100m, 200m and 400m; Davis Dunaway, grade 11, won the 300m hurdles and was second in the high jump; and Niki Iyer, grade 11, won the 1600m with her season-best time of 5:04.
Later in the week, the Eagles traveled to San Mateo for the Bearcat Invitational. Highlights included Aleem placing fourth in the varsity 100m, which was also the top frosh-soph time of the day. Contreras ran personal bests in the 200m and 400m, placing third in the 400m; Dunaway medaled in the pole vault with a jump of 11’0”; and Rohan Daran, grade 12, Grace Koonmen, grade 10, Ananya Krishnan, grade 10, Lev Sepetov, grade 12, and Norman Garcia, grade 11, each set personal bests at the meet. The Eagles will compete at the St. Francis Invitational on Saturday.
Boys Tennis
The boys tennis team dominated last week, defeating Pinewood, Priory and Evergreen Valley all 7-0. They have another busy week as they face Crystal Springs Uplands on Wednesday, Sacred Heart Prep on Thursday and Evergreen Valley on Friday.
Swimming
Harker hosted its largest WBAL meet of the season last week, welcoming Notre Dame San Jose, Priory, Sacred Heart Prep and Mercy Burlingame. Highlights included wins in the girls 200 medley relay with Taylor Kohlmann, grade 10, Grace Guan, grade 12, Vivian Wang, grade 10, and Angela Li, grade 9; first place for Wang in the girls 200 IM and 100 free; first place for Ihita Mandal, grade 9, in the girls 500 free; a win for Alex Yu, grade 9, in the boys 200 IM; Michael Auld, grade 11, winning the boys 500 free; Jack Farnham, grade 11, taking the boys 100 back; and a win for the boys 400 free relay team of Farnham, Auld, Yu and Justin Culpepper, grade 11. Up next for the Eagles is an April 27 meet with King’s Academy at Singh Aquatic Center.
Girls Lacrosse
The girls lacrosse team dropped two games last week, 8-6 to Carlmont and 9-4 to Aragon, despite playing very well. Next up the Eagles host Woodside on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Boys Golf
Last week the boys golf team suffered only their second head-to-head loss of the season as they fell to Palo Alto by just one stroke, 179-178. Leading the way for the Eagles was Avi Khemani, grade 11, who shot an even 33. It’s another busy week for the Eagles as they compete in the Aptos Tournament on Monday, take on Valley Christian on Tuesday and face off with Crystal Springs Uplands on Friday.
Softball
The softball team went 0-2 last week, falling to Mercy Burlingame and Pinewood. In the 9-4 loss to Mercy, Anika Rajamani, grade 9, drove in two runs. In the 14-5 loss to Pinewood, Grace Park, grade 11, had two hits and two RBIs. The girls host Castilleja on Tuesday and Yerba Buena on Friday, both at 4 p.m.
Boys Volleyball
Last week, the boys varsity volleyball team lost its matchup with Pacific Collegiate in four games, but rebounded with a three-game win against King’s Academy. The boys volleyball team is 6-9 on the year, but it sits in first place in the SCVAL El Camino League with a 4-0 league record. The Eagles travel to Wilcox on Wednesday and host Fremont on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Baseball
The varsity baseball team lost two games to a tough San Mateo team last week, 10-2 and 9-1. This week the Eagles face Jefferson on Tuesday at Blackford at 4 p.m., then travel to Jefferson on Thursday, and host Lincoln San Francisco on Saturday at 11 a.m..
