Congratulations to the varsity boys water polo team on being named one of the 29 CIF State Academic Team Champions for the 2016-17 school year. The team GPA of 3.87 was the highest among all boys water polo team in the state. The boys also won the award last year, with a 3.77 GPA, and will receive a banner recognizing this accomplishment again this year. Check out the entire list of State Academic Champions here:
Spring season All-League teams and CCS Scholastic Championship Teams were recently announced, and Harker was well represented!
The state finalist boys golf team once again produced the WBAL MVP, this year with Daulet Tuleubayev, grade 11. Seniors Avi Khemani and Ryan Vaughan earned first team honors, while Shaan Gagneja, Jin Kim, Victor Shin, all grade 11, and Sandip Nirmel, grade 12, earned second team awards.
The lacrosse team had an impressive season and it showed with their postseason accolades. In the classroom, the team was a Top 5 Scholastic Champion with a team GPA of 3.6358. On the field, Elise Mayer, grade 10, and Alayna Richmond, grade 12, were named to the first team, while Mahlet Demissachew and Aditi Maheshwari, both grade 12, were named to the second team. Jordan Thompson, grade 12, earned an honorable mention.
The softball team narrowly missed the playoffs this season, but many Eagles were honored for their notable individual years. Kristin LeBlanc, grade 11, and Anika Rajamani, grade 10, each earned first team honors, with Marti Sutton, grade 12, and Cameron Zell, grade 10, being named to the second team, and Grace Park, grade 12, getting an honorable mention.
The Harker swim team swept the MVP category as Ethan Hu, grade 9, and Vivian Wang, grade 11, (co-MVPs) each took home top honors. Michael Auld, grade 12, was named to the first team, with Justin Culpepper, grade 12, Alex Yu, grade 10, Angela Li, grade 10, all being named to the second team, and Yannick Bohbot-Dridi, grade 11, earning an honorable mention. Also, both the boys and girls swim teams were Top 5 Scholastic Champions, with the boys finishing with a 3.6977 GPA and the girls finishing with a 3.8286 GPA.

On girls track and field, Niki Iyer, grade 12, was named to the WBAL first team, and Grace Koonmen, grade 11, earning an honorable mention. For the boys track and field team, Davis Dunaway, grade 12, was named to the first team, Davis Howard, grade 12, Anthony Contreras, grade 11, and the members of the boys 4×100 relay team – Dunaway, Contreras, Mitchell Granados, grade 10, and Angel Cervantes, grade 11 – received honorable mentions. The boys track and field team was also a Top 5 Scholastic Champion with a GPA of 3.6598.
The boys volleyball team was a Top 5 Scholastic Champion with a team GPA of 3.5172. In addition, SCVAL De Anza Division All-League honors went to Jonathan Schwartz, grade 12, who was named to the second team, and Jeffrey Kwan who was named co-Freshman of the Year.
Finally, the Eagle baseball team earned Peninsula Lake All-League honors with Varun Haltore, grade 12, and Tanay Kamat, grade 11, each being named to the first team, Matthew Kennedy and Dominic Cea, both grade 11, being named to the second team, and Max Lee, grade 9, earning an honorable mention. The boys also performed well in the classroom with a team GPA of 3.5275, earning it recognition as a Top 5 Scholastic Championship.

The Upper School Athletic Awards Ceremony for the 2016-17 season was held last week with many Eagles receiving recognition for amazing seasons and careers.
The Super Eagle Award is given to the athletes who have participated in three competitive sports at Harker during one school year. Earning the Drew Goldstein Commitment Award for playing three sports per year for all four years of high school was Davis Howard, grade 12.

Congratulations to the boys golf team for reaching the CIF State Championship for the second year in a row. More than 1,500 California schools compete every year in boys golf, and Harker ended the season fifth in the state. The top scorer for Harker was Daulet Tuleubayev, grade 11, shooting a 2-under-par 69 at Poppy Hills Golf Course. Congratulations on another great year!

Boys Tennis
Harker sent two doubles teams to compete in CCS last week. Ed Tischler, grade 12, and Ram Vegesna, grade 9, defeated Monterey in the first round before falling to Cupertino in the second round. Juniors Neil Bai and Randy Zhao lost their first round matchup with Pioneer. Congrats on a great season!
Track and Field
Over the weekend, Davis Dunaway, grade 12, represented Harker at the CCS track prelims in the pole vault. Although Dunaway did not make it to the finals, he had a great season!
Alumni Golf
On Monday, Maverick McNealy ’13 made his third trip to the Ben Hogan Award ceremony, and this time he was named the top men’s collegiate golfer. McNealy is one of only two golfers in the award’s history to be a finalist three times, and he is currently one of only two golfers to be ranked in the top 10 in all four major college and amateur ranking systems. VA (Grades 7-8) Baseball: The Varsity A team, coached by Jeff Paull, Matt Arensberg and Richard Amarillas, finished in first place in the WBAL with a record of 5-0. This is the first lower or middle school baseball team to win a league title since the league started back in 2008! Team awards went to Marcus Anderson, grade 8, and Nicholas Coulter, grade 8 (co-MVPs), Levi Sutton, grade 8 (Eagle) and George Wehner, grade 8 (Coaches).
JVA (Grades 4-6) Baseball: The Junior Varsity A team, coached by Jon Cvitanich, Tim Hopkins and Jeff Martarano, finished in fifth place in the WBAL with a record of 1-4. Team awards went to Drew Diffenderfer, grade 4 (MVP), Jack Ledford, grade 5 (Eagle) and Wyatt Cote, grade 6 (Coaches).
Intramural (Grades 4-5) Baseball: Team awards went to Nathan Wilcox, grade 4 (Eagle) and Anderson Chung, grade 4, and Advay Monga, grade 4 (Coaches). The team was coached by Ken Allen, Tobias Wade and Justin Sullivan.

The team finished the MTP tournament in third place and had an overall season record of 8-3. VA (Grades 6-8) Golf: The Varsity A golf team, coached by Ie-Chen Cheng, took first place in the WBAL spring tournament, held at a tough Crystal Springs Golf Course. The team shot a 164 on the front nine. They beat the rest of the field by 21 strokes! The top four golfers were Natalie Vo, grade 8 (39), Aditya Tadimeti, grade 8 (39), Bowen Yin, grade 8 (42) and Marcus Page, grade 7 (44).
LS (Grades 4-5) Boys Track: The lower school boys team took second place overall at the WBAL track meet. The top fifth grade performance was turned in by Veyd Patil (second place in the 800). Top fourth grade performances were turned in by Vyom Vidyarthi (first place in the 400 and 800 and second place in the 200), Ori Muramatsu (second place in the 800), Robert Fields (second place in the 400) and Oskar Baumgarte (second place in the long jump).
LS (Grades 4-5) Girls Track: The lower school girls team took second place overall at the WBAL track meet. Top fifth grade performances were turned in by Katherine Fields (second place in the 800) and Mira Goodwin (second place in the 400). Top fourth grade performances were turned in by Chiling Han (first place in the 800), Claire Anderson (second place in the softball throw) and the 4×100 relay team (third place with Claire Anderson, Chiling Han, Genieve Malinen and Sidak Sanghari)
MS (Grades 6-8) Boys Track: The middle school boys track team took first place overall at the WBAL track meet for the first time ever! Top eighth grade performances were turned in by Anton Novikov (first place in the 100 and 200 and anchored the first place 4×100 relay team with Bayden Yazalina, McCoy Buchsteiner and Rosh Roy) and Arya Maheshwari (first place in the 1200). Top seventh grade performances were turned in by Justin Fung (first place in the 50, 100 and 200 and anchored the first place 4×100 relay team with Ishaan Mantripragada, Muthiah Panchanatham and Harsh Deep) and Harsh Deep (first place in the 400). Top sixth grade performances were turned in by Rigo Gonzales (first place in the 100, 200 and 400) and Siddharth Selvakumar (first place in the softball throw).
MS (Grades 6-8) Girls Track: The middle school girls track team took fifth place overall at the WBAL track meet. Top eighth grade performances were turned in by Anna Vazhaeparambil (first place in the long jump) and Anna Weirich (second place in the 800 and 1,200). The top seventh grade performance was turned in Ashley Barth (third place in the long jump).
Harker’s swimmers had an impressive showing at the CCS Finals last week, placing 17th out of 43 teams. Leading the way were Ethan Hu, grade 9, who won the 100 butterfly, breaking the school record and becoming only the sixth Harker athlete to win an individual CCS championship, and Vivian Wang, grade 11, who took second in the 100 breaststroke, also breaking a school record. Both Hu and Wang qualified for the CIF State Championships this weekend in Fresno. Wang is seeded fifth and Hu fourth in their respective events. Other impressive finishes included the boys 200 free relay team of Justin Culpepper, Michael Auld, Jack Farnham, all grade 12, and Hu finishing 13th, and the boys 400 free relay team of Culpepper, Auld, Farnham and Yannick Bohbot-Dridi, grade 11, finishing 11th and breaking the school record.
Boys Golf
The boys golf team won the CCS regional tournament last week, a Harker first. Daulet Tuleubayev, grade 11, was the overall individual winner and Ryan Vaughan, grade 12, took fourth. The Eagles move on to the CCS Finals on Tuesday in Monterey.
Lacrosse
The lacrosse team opened the WBAL Skyline Division playoffs last week with a 13-8 win over visiting Sacred Heart Cathedral. However, the team’s season ended later in the week as it fell to eventual champion Burlingame High 14-3. It was a huge year for the girls, as they ended the season with a 13-7 record.
Boys Tennis
The boys doubles team of Edward Tischler, grade 12, and Ram Vegesna, grade 9, take the court on Tuesday against a duo from Aptos in the first round of the CCS doubles championship.
Track and Field
The Eagles competed at the WBAL Championships last Friday with lots of impressive results:
Niki Iyer, grade 12, finished first in the 3,200-meter and advances to the CCS trials this weekend.
Davis Dunaway, grade 12, finished first in the varsity pole vault with a personal best, qualifying for CCS. He also had a fourth place finish in the varsity long jump, setting a new school record, as well as new personal best in a fourth place 100 finish.
Davis Howard, grade 12, finished third in both the varsity shot put and discus, setting a personal best in the discus.
Grace Koonmen, grade 11, set a new school record while taking third place in the varsity long jump.
Anthony Contreras, grade 11, took third in both the varsity 200 and 400.
The varsity boys 4×100 relay team of Dunaway, Contreras, Angel Cervantes, grade 11, and Mitch Granados, grade 10, took third place.
Marcus Tymous, grade 10, took first in the JV boys 100 and 200, as well as second in the JV boys long jump.
Delaney Logue, grade 9, finished third in the JV girls 800.
Sameer Prakash, grade 9, finished third in the JV boys 100.
Boys Volleyball
The boys volleyball team lost 3-0 to Sobrato in the first round of the CCS playoffs last week. The Eagles finished 14-14 on the season.
Softball
The softball team dropped the final two games of the regular season, narrowly missing out on the playoffs. The Eagles dropped an 18-8 game to Mercy Burlingame before losing a heartbreaker to Pinweood 17-16 in the season finale. The girls finished 11-9 on the season.
Baseball
The baseball team ended its season last week with an 8-4 win over Mills, followed by a 12-2 loss to Menlo. In the win over Mills, juniors Tanay Kamat and Matthew Kennedy each drove in two runs. In the final game of the year, Dominic Cea, grade 11, and Varun Haltore, the lone senior, each drove in a run for the Eagles. The boys finished 13-11 on the season.
Maverick McNealy ’13 was named one of three finalists for The Ben Hogan Award, given annually to the top men’s college golfer. Colonial Country Club, Friends of Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America take into account all collegiate and amateur competitions over the last year when selecting the finalists. McNealy joins Bill Haas of Wake Forest as the only three-time finalist for this award. The winner “will receive the first exemption into the PGA Tour’s 2018 Dean & DeLuca Invitational, as well as earn a $30,000 grant for its [college’s] men’s golf scholarship program,” according to thebenhoganaward.org.
This is the sixth time a Stanford golfer has made it to the final three for this award, of which only one Cardinal golfer has won.
Among his many accolades, McNealy is currently No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and was recently named the winner of the 2017 Byron Nelson Award.
Congratulations to Remi Edvalson, grade 8, who was recently chosen for USA Diving’s 2017 Junior National Squad. Edvalson was one of only 30 divers nationwide – and one of just three Californians – invited to be a part of this prestigious group. “The program is aimed at providing these athletes the resources needed to help them continue to progress in their training, with the ultimate goal of developing into future senior national team members and potential Olympic team members,” according to teamusa.org.
The boys tennis team defeated Prospect 7-0 in the opening round of CCS last week, but it ran into undefeated St. Ignatius in the second round and was defeated 6-1, ending a historic season that saw it tally 19 wins. Congrats on a great year as a team! The doubles team of Ed Tischler, grade 12, and Ram Vegesna, grade 9, is still competing as they take on a duo from Aptos in the first round of CCS doubles on May 16.
Boys Golf
The boys golf team continued its amazing play as it won the WBAL Tournamnet last week, with Daulet Tuleubayev, grade 11, winning the overall individual title and Jin Kim, grade 11, taking second. This week, the Eagles head to Laguna Seca for the CCS Regional Tournament.
Softball
The softball team brought its record to 11-7 after going 1-1 last week. In an 8-7 win over The King’s Academy, Marti Sutton, grade 12, had two hits and drove in three runs. Later in the week, the Eagles ran into a strong Notre Dame Belmont team and were defeated 10-1. Joyce Li, grade 12, drove in the only run for Harker. This week, the girls travel to Mercy Burlingame on Tuesday and Pinewood on Thursday with a CCS berth on the line.
Lacrosse
Last week, the lacrosse team picked up its seventh and eighth straight victories with an 18-14 win over Mercy Burlingame and a 15-6 win over Notre Dame San Jose. The girls finished fourth in league and will host their first round WBAL-Skyline Division playoff game against Sacred Heart Cathedral on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Swim
The WBAL swim finals were held over the weekend with some good Harker results. Two Eagles became league champs as Vivian Wang, grade 11, won both the 50 free and 100 fly, and Ethan Hu, grade 9, started his high school career with a 200 IM league championship. Hu also set a new school record in the 100 back, finishing second. Other top finishers included Michael Auld, grade 12, who took second in the 200 free; Alex Yu, grade 10, who finished second in the 500 free; and Justin Culpepper, grade 12, who finished third in the 100 fly. In addition, the boys 200 medley relay team of Kevin Tzeng, grade 11, Arnav Joshi, grade 9, Alex Wang, grade 11, and Yu finished second; the boys 400 free relay team of Yannick Bohbot-Dridi, grade 11, Hu, Auld and Yu finished third; and the boys 200 free relay team of Bohbot-Dridi, Culpepper, Auld and Hu finished second. CCS trials begin this Friday with the following Harker swimmers vying for a championship: Vivian Wang, grade 11, Angela Li, grade 10, Taylor Kohlmann, grade 11, Alyssa Huang, grade 9, Clarrisa Wang, grade 10, Alicia Xu, grade 9 (alternate), Ethan Hu, grade 9, Michael Auld, grade 12, Alex Yu, grade 10, Justin Culpepper, grade 12, Yannick Bohbot-Dridi, grade 11, Jack Farnham, grade 12, Kevin Tzeng, grade 11, and Alex Wang grade 11 (alternate).
Track an Field
This Friday is the WBAL track and field finals at Palo Alto and the Eagles will be well represented. Anthony Contreras, grade 11, will run in the 200 and 400 after finishing second in both events at the trials; Angel Cervantes, grade 11, set personal bests in the 100 and 200 and will race in both events in the league finals; Grace Koonmen, grade 11, will compete for a league long jump title; and Davis Dunaway, grade 12, will sprint in the 100 league finals. In the JV finals, Kismet Singh, Nikki Solanki and Zoey Rosa, all grade 9, and Lilly Anderson, grade 10, all qualified for the 100 hurdles, and Delaney Logue, grade 9, will run in the 800.
Boys Volleyball
The boys volleyball team lost 3-0 to Monta Vista last week, but still qualified for CCS. The boys open up the first round of the tournament at Sobrato on Tuesday night.
Baseball
The baseball team pushed its record over .500 to 12-10 as it picked up three wins last week. In a 14-9 victory over Trinity Christian, Matthew Kennedy, grade 11, led the offense driving in three runs. Later in the week, the Eagles defeated Jefferson 8-2 with Kennedy and Zach Hoffman, grade 10, each driving in two runs. Finally, the boys picked up a 7-4 win over Jefferson with Mitchell Kole, grade 11, picking up two hits and three RBIs. The Eagles finish their regular season this week with trips to Mills on Monday and Menlo on Thursday.
It was Senior Day at Singh Aquatic Center last week, as Jack Farnham, Michael Auld and Justin Culpepper were honored. In the pool, Ethan Hu, grade 9, Yannick Bohbot-Dridi, grade 11, Alex Yu, grade 10, Auld, Culpepper, Vivian Wang, grade 11 and the girls 200 medley relay team each won their events. Qualifying for CCS were Farnham in the 100 backstroke, Bohbot-Dridi in the 200 individual medley, the girls 200 medley relay team and the girls 200 freestyle relay team. The Eagles head to Sacred Heart Prep for league finals this Friday.
Boys Volleyball
The boys volleyball team is now 14-12 on the season after dropping matches to Saratoga and Cupertino last week. The Eagles host Monta Vista on Wednesday for the final regular season match of the year, which is also Senior Night.
Boys Golf
The boys golf team defeated The King’s Academy 174-255 last week to complete an undefeated season and earn a fourth consecutive league title. Daulet Tuleubayev, grade 11, and Ryan Vaughan, grade 12, each shot a 35 to tie for the top score of the day. This Wednesday, the Eagles travel to Eagle Ridge for the WBAL Championship.
Lacrosse
The lacrosse team picked up a 14-2 win over Notre Dame Belmont and an 8-7 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral last week to bring their season record to 10-6. The Eagles host Mercy Burlingame on Tuesday and Notre Dame San Jose on Friday to finish off league play. The girls are currently in third place in league, but within striking distance of the top two teams.
Softball
The softball team had a roller coaster of a week as it lost a heartbreaking 10-9 game in 10 innings to Cupertino before taking care of Notre Dame San Jose 10-1 later in the week. In the loss to Cupertino, seniors Joyce Li, Grace Park and Marti Sutton each drove in two runs. In the victory over NDSJ, Anika Rajamani, grade 10, had four hits and drove in three runs. Kristin LeBlanc, grade 11, was equally as impressive on the mound as she struck out nine batters to pick up the win. This week, the Eagles host The King’s Academy on Tuesday and Notre Dame Belmont on Thursday.
Boys Tennis
The boys tennis team had an impressive showing at the WBAL Tournament last week as the doubles finals round was Harker vs. Harker. The team of Ed Tischler, grade 12, and Ram Vegesna, grade 9, defeated the duo of Randy Zhao, grade 11, and Neil Bai, grade 11, to earn the league title. Rishi Dange, grade 9, and David Wen, grade 11, went third and fourth respectively in singles play. CCS boys tennis starts on Wednesday.
Baseball
First place El Camino swept two games from the baseball team last week before the Eagles picked up a win over North Valley Baptist. In a 9-1 loss to El Camino, Mitchell Kole, grade 11, drove in the only Harker run. Later in the week, the Eagles fell 9-8 to El Camino with Varun Haltore, grade 12, leading the offense with three hits and an RBI. Finally, the Eagles took care of NVB 10-0 with Dominic Cea, grade 11, picking up three hits and three RBIs. Cea also combined with Tanay Kamat, grade 11, for a no hitter, striking out 10. This week, the Eagles play at Jefferson on Tuesday and at home against Jefferson on Thursday.
Track and Field
The track and field team competed at the final WBAL meet of the regular season and once again had some great results. The boys 400-meter relay team lowered its season best time as it won its event. Setting the second best Harker time and winning the 100 hurdles was Kismet Singh, grade 9. Anthony Contreras, grade 11, took second in the 100 and 200, setting a personal best in the 100. Grace Koonmen, grade 11, improved her best jump by over a foot in the long jump as she took the number three spot in the league rankings. Tiffany Shou, grade 11, and Davis Howard, grade 12, each threw personal bests in the shot put. The Eagles compete at the WBAL trials this Saturday at Palo Alto High.

Congratulations to Elise Mayer, grade 10, who was among the top female lacrosse players in the Bay Area to be invited to try out for the National Lacrosse Team. After a grueling tryout, Mayer made Team No. 1 and will represent NorCal in a national competition at Yale over Memorial Day weekend. Great job Elise!
Boys Golf
It was business as usual for the boys golf team last week as it picked up two more wins. The Eagles started the week shooting their best score in Harker history with a 2-under-par performance as a team, defeating Menlo 178-187. Jin Kim, grade 11, led the team as he medaled with a 34. Later in the week, the boys defeated Crystal Springs Uplands 178-207. The Eagles shot the top four scores, with Ryan Vaughan, grade 12, leading the way with a 33, followed closely by Avi Khemani, grade 12, shooting a 34. Today, the Eagles take on Sacred Heart Prep and Thursday they face off with The King’s Academy.
Boys Tennis
The boys tennis team stayed red hot as it swept Priory and Pinewood last week, both 7-0, and have now won seven matches in a row. Today and tomorrow, the Eagles will be playing in CCS qualifying matches at Menlo, with CCS starting next week.
Lacrosse
It was a very good week for the lacrosse team as it picked up three wins to bring the season record to 8-6. The girls started the week with an 18-10 win over Salinas, followed by a hard-fought 13-12 win over Carlmont, with a 20-10 victory over Stevenson to finish the week. This week, the Eagles host Notre Dame Belmont on Tuesday and travel to Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday.
Softball
Members of the softball team flexed their muscles as they put up big numbers in two wins last week. In a 12-1 win over Fremont early in the week, Kristin LeBlanc, grade 11, had three hits and three RBIs, with Grace Park, grade 12, and Taylor Lam, grade 10, also driving in two runs each. Later in the week, it was LeBlanc making noise on the mound as she no-hit Castilleja in a 15-0 mercy rule game. Park led the offense with three RBIs. This week, the Eagles travel to Cupertino on Tuesday and host Notre Dame San Jose on Thursday.
Track and Field
The Eagles took their largest team ever to face off with some of the best in CCS track last week at the CCS Top 8 at Los Gatos. The girls 400-meter relay team of Grace Koonmen, grade 11, Gloria Guo, grade 11, Nikki Solanki, grade 9, and Alycia Cary, grade 10, broke their school record for the third time this season, lowering their mark by .5 seconds. Also, Anthony Contreras, grade 11, ran a personal best in the 400. Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Sacred Heart Prep for WBAL meet No. 3.
Boys Volleyball
The boys volleyball team dropped a 3-2 match with Homestead last week to bring its season record to 14-10 on the season. This week, the Eagles take on Saratoga at home on Wednesday and travel to Cupertino on Friday.
Baseball
The baseball team went 1-2 last week, dropping 9-0 and 6-4 games to Crystal Springs Uplands, before defeating San Jose 13-2 later in the week. The 8-8 Eagles play home and away on Tuesday and Thursday versus El Camino before traveling to North Valley Baptist on Friday.
Swim
The swim team was off last week.It will take on The King’s Academy this Wednesday at Singh Aquatic Center.
