A huge congratulations to the five Harker swimmers who competed at the state championships this weekend. Ethan Hu, grade 10, brought home Harker’s first-ever state championship, in any sport, as he won the 100 butterfly. Hu also placed fourth in the 200 IM (and was mentioned in an article in The Mercury News); Matthew Chung, grade 9, took 20th in the 500 free; Jason Kwok, grade 9, was 33rd in the 100 breast; the 400 free relay team of Chung, Hu, Rhys Edwards, grade 9, and Yannick Bohbot-Dridi, grade 12, took 21st; and the 200 medley relay team of Chung, Kwok, Hu and Edwards was 22nd.
Boys Tennis
David Wen, grade 12, won his first CCS match last week 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 before falling to the No. 1 seed in the second round. The duo of Neil Bai and Randy Zhao, both grade 12, also won their first round match, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, before falling to the No. 1 doubles team in the second round as well.
Boys Volleyball
The boys volleyball season continues this Tuesday night as the Eagles are ranked No. 3 in the CIF D2 Boys Volleyball Championship and will host St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo.
Boys Golf
The boys golf team finished its season in fifth place last week at the CCS Championships. Daulet Tuleubayev, grade 12, was the top individual Eagle finishing tied for seventh in CCS.
Track and Field
The lone Harker representative at the CCS preliminaries, Ayush Vyas, grade 11, finished 30th in CCS in the discus this weekend.
Spring Scholastic Championship Teams
Many Harker spring teams were named 2018 Scholastic Championship teams by having a top five GPA in their respective sports in CCS. Baseball (3.8780), boys volleyball (3.7400) and boys golf (3.8780) were tops in their sports; girls lacrosse (3.7250) and boys track and field (3.6950) finished second in their sports; softball (3.7250) and girls swimming (3.7560) each finished fourth; and boys swimming (3.6150) and boys tennis (3.6660) finished fifth. Multiple media outlets, April 30, 2018: Two Harker students hit the media jackpot when the story of their prom dress rental app was featured in the San Jose Mercury News. KPIX/CBS and KRON4 both came to the campus to interview the girls for the news that evening. The story was then picked up by other news outlets, including SiliconValley.com. The team also earned third place at the Baylor 2018 Youth Entrepreneur Awards.

Three Harker alumni were named to this year’s Forbes 30 Under 30 lists, which feature 600 young stars in 20 different industries. Siddarth Satish ’06, founder of Gauss Surgical in Cupertino, was selected in the health care category. Forbes noted, “Using the iPad’s built-in camera and computer vision algorithms, Siddarth Satish has developed an FDA-cleared app to monitor blood loss in the OR. It’s been used for thousands of patients to make childbirth safer. The company has raised $24.6 million.”
Chadwick Manning ’07, co-founder of ElectrIQ Power Inc. in Palo Alto, made the list in the energy category. ElectrIQ (pronounced “electric”) is an energy storage, monitoring and management company. It innovates integrated hardware and intelligent software solutions to help homeowners and small businesses access more affordable and sustainable electricity, Manning explained.
Following his appointment to the Forbes list, Manning noted “success is a road always under construction. You fail many more times than you succeed. The ones who make it typically aren’t the most intelligent, but they are the ones that have true grit, they admit when they’re wrong and change course, and they surround themselves with passionate, trusting people with complementary skill sets.” When he’s away from the office, Manning gets outdoors and travels as much as possible. “Hiking, skateboarding, biking, tennis and golfing are my favorites,” he said.
Meghana Dhar ’06 is director of retail partnerships for B8ta, located in San Francisco, and is a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree in the retail and e-commerce category. Her Forbes profile notes, “The eBay alum is responsible for opening 700 stores for B8ta by 2018. The company launches brick and mortar stores for trendy tech products and provides them with customer engagement and interaction data.”
The boys basketball team picked up two impressive wins last week. First, the Eagles defeated Crystal Springs Uplands 74-38 behind 13 points from Eric Jeong, grade 12, and 12 points from Peter Connors, grade 12. Later in the week, the boys defeated a very tall Woodside Priory team 73-62, with Jack Connors, grade 10, leading the way with 17 points, including five three-pointers. The 8-4 Eagles take on Eastside College Prep this Tuesday at home before traveling to Menlo on Thursday.
Girls Soccer
The girls soccer team won both matches last week as it defeated Eastside College Prep 3-0 and Mercy SF 7-1. The Eagles host Pinewood on Tuesday at Davis Field at 3:30 p.m.
Boys Soccer
The boys soccer team won its fourth and fifth straight matches last week as it defeated The King’s Academy 4-1 and Monta Vista 6-0. The 6-0-1 Eagles travel to Priory this Wednesday and Crystal Springs Uplands on Friday.
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball team dropped two games last week. Notre Dame San Jose defeated the Eagles 76-31 early in the week with Maria Vazhaeparambil, grade 9, leading the way with nine points. Later in the week, the girls fell to Mercy SF 77-29. The Eagles travel to the College of San Mateo to take on Mercy Burlingame this Saturday.
Football
Congrats to Dominic Cea, grade 12, on being named to the third team of the All-Bay Area News Group offensive team. Athletes from Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties were recognized for their achievements on the gridiron this past fall season. Cea went 56 for 59 on extra points and seven of eight on field-goal attempts as a kicker, helping the Eagles to their best season in school history. Check out the full list here:
