Last month, Fiona Yan, grade 6, took first place in the declamation novice category at the John Lewis Silicon Valley Urban Debate League Invitational, held at Silver Creek High School. The event was attended by more than 1,000 people representing more than 100 schools. In the final declamation novice round, Yan competed against five high school students to take the top spot.
