Senior wins silver medal at Int’l AI Olympiad

Senior Lily Shi (pictured above, third from right) earned a silver medal earlier this month at the second annual International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence in Beijing, in which she was a member of one of two teams from the United States. Her medal was one of three individual silvers won by the U.S. across both teams, whose members also won three bronze medals and an honorable mention. Shi qualified for the IOAI over the summer after becoming one of just 12 students selected to attend a June training camp, after which eight students were chosen to compete in Beijing. IOAI is a new addition to the International Science Olympiads and attracted 300 contestants from 60 countries this year. Entrants competed individually over two days, completing three AI problems a day over a period of six hours, testing their theoretical knowledge as well as practical problem solving. The event also included a team challenge, where teams tested their applied problem-solving skills.
