On Sept. 20, the Harker Programming Club held its annual Girls Programming League Challenge, which included more than 50 teams of three or fewer female-identifying and non-binary team members from across the world. Held entirely online, the competition allowed entrants to compete in either a novice or advanced division, each featuring problems that were written and tested by club officers. This year’s theme was fitness, and guest speakers were invited to share their expertise on computer science’s role in the fitness field. Experts who spoke via Zoom to participants were Dr. Joy Ku, senior director at the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance at Stanford University, Datadog software engineer Sophia Cheung (formerly an engineer at the exercise equipment company Peloton Interactive) and Aashi Shrimal, a software engineer at the wearable technology company WHOOP. “The three experts shared their personal experience, struggles, and successes in their careers, giving many aspiring young programmers knowledge about the cutting-edge intersection of computer science and fitness,” said senior Brenna Ren, president of the Harker Programming Club.
