This story was submitted by middle school Latin teacher Lisa Masoni.
A delegation of 19 middle school Latin students kicked off spring break with the Junior Classical League’s second (and hopefully last) Virtual State Latin Convention. Some students chose to attend virtually together, welcoming a group of upper school students to the library to attend assemblies, workshops and competitions over Zoom. It was the first visit to the Union campus for some of the upper school students.
The middle school delegation took third place in Spirit with seventh grader Megha Unny’s poster and song parody, titled “The Twelve Days of Saturnalia.” Other school awards included first place for Scrapbook (Chelsea Xie, historian, grade 7) and third for T-shirt Design (Raeanne Li, grade 7).
The MS1 certamen (quiz bowl) team of sixth graders Avi Gupta, Rory Hu, Zahra Syed and Lucas Yuan placed first in the state. The MS3 team – eighth graders Aidan Okyar, Kairui Sun and Rahul Sundaresan – placed second in their division, and the MS2 team – seventh graders Ameera Ramzan, Sanjith Senthil, Vera Sorotokin and Chelsea Xie – lost a heartbreaking tie breaker for third place and a seat in the final round, but fourth in the state is nothing to sneeze at!
Several upper school students will serve on the California JCL state board for the 2022-23 school year: sophomore Trisha Iyer as historian and junior Tiffany Chang as Nuntius editor. In addition, junior Rupert Chen was approved by the state to run for national first vice president.
Last but not least, Raeanne Li’s opinion piece for The Eagle Gazette on the need for students to respect each other’s choices for language study won Best School-Affiliated Media in the National Junior Classical League Publicity Contest for the month of March, with the following notification from the NJCL:
“Thank you for your submission for the Publicity Contest. This was a wonderful article, and we were moved by the message.”

In late February, seventh grader Aaron Ma took first place in the instrumental solo junior group and the instrumental ensemble intermediate group and in the United States Open Music Competition, an annual competition highlighting young classical musicians. In addition to his two first place wins, Ma also received the Outstanding Gold Medalist award at the USOMC winners’ concert.
Last month, Harker won the overall sweepstakes award at a speech and debate tournament held at the University of California, Berkeley. The team is particularly proud of this award, as it reflects the combined record of all of the over 100 upper and middle School students who participated. Every good ranking or win added to the total, which reflected the students’ effort toward achieving the same goal. This tournament is the largest invitational in the country, and winning the sweepstakes is a major goal for the team. Teams at both campuses enjoyed ice cream socials to celebrate. “The coaches are very proud of how resilient the students have been during online events,” said Jenny Achten, speech and debate department chair. “We look forward to getting back to traveling in person to tournaments soon.”
Two Harker students recently earned high marks in the American Protégé International Piano and String Competition. Seventh grader Christine Tao, a pianist, placed second in the junior category (ages 11-14) with her performance of Chopin’s “Nocturne #8 in D Flat Major,” while her brother, fifth grader James, placed second in the young musicians category (ages 5-10) for his rendition of Mozart’s “Fantasia in D Minor.” Both have been invited to perform at the Weill Recital Hall at New York’s Carnegie Hall during American Protégé’s 2023 recital season. Videos of Christine’s and James’ performances have been made available. Congratulations to both of these young talents!
Late last month, 166 Harker students were named regional winners in the 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, with 75 art awards and 91 writing awards. Among them were 28 Gold Key winners, 49 Silver Key winners and 89 Honorable Mentions. All Gold Key winners are eligible to win national awards, which will be announced in March, and national medalists will be invited to a national ceremony in New York City, scheduled for June.

This Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., Harker sixth grader Rory Hu will appear in a segment of Nickelodeon’s “Nick News,” interviewing Janet Yellen, the first woman to become the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. The interview will cover topics such as the nation’s economy and the American Women Quarters Program. Hu also will be featured in a tour of the U.S. Mint.
Michelle Wei, grade 10, and Helen Gu, grade 8, recently won Silver Awards for their submissions to the 2021 Ocean Awareness Contest. The competition was held by Bow Seat Ocean Programs, an organization that promotes ocean conservation efforts through a variety of initiatives that engage middle and high school students.
The Ocean Awareness Contest is held annually and invites students to submit creations across a wide range of media, including art, creative writing, music and film. Wei submitted a short story called “Water Monster” about a mother and son living in an area with very limited access to clean water, and Gu’s submission was an elegiac poem titled “see her fall,” about the ongoing harm being done to the world’s oceans. They received support from middle school English teacher Marjorie Hazeltine.
The contest received had nearly 6,000 participants, and winners in every category have been featured in a special ocean advocacy gallery.
The new middle school student newspaper, the Eagle Gazette, was distributed to the campus community just before the winter break. Pieced together by a large team of editors and writers, the paper covers a wide variety of topics, including food, school life and athletics.
Its origins stretch back to the start of the 2021-22 school year, when a newspaper club was founded and quickly grew beyond expectations, eventually bringing in more than 30 staff members. Advisors Jennifer Walrod and Julie Meadows intended for the newspaper to be almost entirely student-run, limiting their role to weekly meetings with editors to discuss their plans and any difficulties they had encountered.
Eighth grader Ananya Pradhan one of the paper’s five editors-in-chief, joined the paper shortly after being elected to the middle school leadership council. In addition to appealing to her love of writing and design, the Gazette offered students a voice on campus. “I believe that the ability for us, the students, to have a creative outlet to express our beliefs, talents, and opinions, is an incredibly valuable opportunity and necessity, as I am a strong supporter of the idea that the student’s voices should be represented and celebrated throughout our community,” she said.
The paper’s five editors each oversee a different section of the paper and advise contributors in addition to planning out meetings and setting deadlines. Editors also contributed to the early design of the paper. “We brainstorm with writers to think of intriguing articles,” said Phoebe Lee, grade 7, another of the Gazette’s editors. “I loved seeing all the writers brainstorm about their ideas together for the future editions. After so many revisions and much coordination, it was such a rewarding feeling to see all the writers’ ideas materialize into the first edition of the Eagle Gazette.”
In future issues, Pradhan said she hopes to see more story ideas pitched by student writers, and Lee said she wanted to see more sections added to the paper, such as one dedicated to learning more about middle school teachers. “In addition, sections like movie or gaming reviews will help to reach a wider audience,” said Lee.
Pradhan found it heartening to see an enthusiasm for writing in so many of her peers. “It always amazes me to see how many enthusiastic peers I have who love writing, and me leading them in growing as writers of the Eagle Gazette has been truly invaluable,” she said, adding that the Gazette is also helping to preserve printed media amidst the prevalence of digital information: “We’re doing our part to also keep the printed news alive, available, and accessible to everyone, even for the younger generations, who will be our future writers and leaders.”
On Dec. 2, Shikha Mittal ’05 spoke to middle school students via Zoom about her path to becoming a lawyer. Starting out as a finance major at Santa Clara University, she decided to lean into her love of debate and negotiation and go into law. “I realized pretty early on in my college years that law was an area that might be a good career fit for me.” She ended up in the tech industry as an in-house lawyer at a Bay Area startup, and currently works at Databricks, an enterprise software company.
While discussing the rigors of law school, she recalled long study sessions for exams and preparing for the bar exam, which she described as “one of the hardest exams you’ll ever take in your life.” However, she advised that those factors shouldn’t dissuade students from seeking a career in law. “If you feel like you are interested in law and you want that to be your career, I wouldn’t say law school should be a detractor,” she said.
Mittal also talked about the differences between being an outside counsel lawyer, who works at a firm that is hired by companies, and an in-house lawyer, who is an employee of the company. She said that she has enjoyed the work-life balance as an in-house lawyer, as well as other perks of being an employee where she works.
In late October, seventh grader Ivanya Sadana traveled to Houston to compete at the Houston Squash Club Junior Gold tournament, where she won bronze in her division. The tournament featured 176 competitors from across the country. Sadana is currently ranked fourth in California in the girls under 13 division. Great work!
